Peepli Live is an upcoming Hindi film which is produced by Aamir Khan. Written and directed by NDTV journalist Anusha Rizvi. This is her first directorial venture. The film is based on a satire on the farmers' suicide. The film portrays the migration of lives from villages to cities. The film takes a dig at Media and political response over an issue. It also sends a message of widening gap between Rural India and Urban India due to lack of development infrastructure. The title of the film Peepli Live has been taken from a small Peepli village in Orissa while Raghubir Yadav, who plays a character of Budhia is also inspired by the World’s Youngest Marathon runner Budhiya Singh.
The film doesn’t boast of any big Bollywood names. Many of the actors in the movie are tribals from the village of Bhadwai in Madhya Pradesh while other cast members are from late playwright Habib Tanvir’s theatre troupe Naya Theatre. The film stars Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghubir Yadav, Naseeruddin Shah, Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa, Farrukh Jaffer, Vishal O. Sharma, Aamir Bashir, Sitaram Panchal and Yugal Kishore.
Peepli Live story goes like this On the eve of national elections in the Indian village of Peepli, two poor farmers, Natha and Budhia, face losing their land over an unpaid government loan. Desperate, they seek help from an apathetic local politician, who suggests they commit suicide to benefit from a government programme that aids the families of indebted deceased farmers. Political bigwigs, high-ranking bureaucrats, local henchmen and the ever-zealous media descend upon sleepy Peepli to stake their claim. The question on everyone’s lips - “Will he or Won’t he?” As the mania escalates what will be the fate of Farmer Natha; nobody seems to care how he really feels?
Before the release, the film has already received huge acclaimed and competed in the Sundance Film Festival, the first film from India to achieve this feat. Peepli Live was filmed on location in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi. Late Gangaram Siwar was born in in 1930s, and he penned scores of popular Chhattisgarhi folk songs dealing with daily life in Chhattisgarh. He also worked as a folk singer for AIR (All India Radio) for nearly four decades. The local AIR still airs his originally composed song "Chola mati ke Ram" time to time. Fusion-rock band Indian Ocean mark their comeback to Bollywood after six years with their compositions ‘Darte ho’ and ‘Desh mera’. Peepli Live, distributed by UTV Motion Pictures, is scheduled for release on 13 August 2010.
